Chess Assistant 9 vs. ChessBase 9. Which one is better? which one should you use? The programs are very different. Though they serve the same purpose of analysing databases of games, helping you study chess, both are very dis-similar in design.
Though both programs are the leaders in database chess software, ChessBase is recognized as the premier product. It is reliable, powerful, and the standard of many top chess players.
Chess Assistant has a reputation for occassional bugginess as the Russian developers hurried to stay apace ChessBase products. Chess Assistant does lead in terms of an easier, more intuitive interface. Their product is easy to understand, while some have complained that ChessBase requires some getting used to.
The ChessBase 9 software is in my opinion still the leader by a narrow margin, but you will pay less for ChessAssistant 9. The newly released Chess Assistant 9 (June 2006) is available in Mega, Professional, and Starter versions.

I owned an erlier version of both database CB8 and CA 7.1, strangely its my experiences were the complete opposite of your review ... i do in fact find CB easier to use because CA have more convulated functions than CB and much much faster than CB and also much cheaper, . I often use CA nowadays in analyzing games because of stronger engines embedded in the database(Chess Tiger 16). But generally to choose between the two is just a matter of taste and economics.
