Fischer, the 11th and
perhaps most legendary world chess champion, “invented” Chess960. Also know as
Fischer Random Chess, the game was first presented by Fischer on June 19, 1996
in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Chess960 may be Bobby's
most important legacy to his fans and chess devotees around world. With this
alternate way of playing chess, Fischer put creativity and talent back on
center stage.
Through the elimination of
opening theory, Fischer brought chess to a whole new level. By shuffling the
pieces on the back row, according to certain rules, and mirroring the position
on the other side of the board, 960 different starting positions may be
produced.
The new DGT 960
chess clock brings “Fischer Random” or “shuffle chess” to the forefront of
game play. DGT960 creates an easy, practical way to generate these positions on
the fly.
In honor of Bobby Fischer,
chess clubs, schools, organizers and directors from all over the world are
invited to organize
a Chess960 tournament
in 2008.
