I recently had the pleasure of spending some time with the people behind the Queen of Katwe story. Coach Robert Katende, Phiona Mutesi, and Benjamin attended Chess4Life’s annual party hosted by Elliott Neff. During this visit I learned that coach Robert took great care to recollect and present in the movie the actual chess positions and games that occurred in real life.

The Queen of Katwe movie is available on DVD at Chess House.  It’s a moving, real-life story with often humorous chess scenes. More than 4 out of 5 people liked the movie according to this critic source.

The untold story behind the Disney movie, is a great initiative by Robert Katende, the man who made possible the success of Ugandan chess champion Phiona Mutesi. His work to introduce and develop chess programs in the slums of Uganada is truly “transforming lives through chess, one move at time”.
