While chess is an excellent tool for developing problem-solving and cognitive skills in children, do I think it should be required? In my opinion, no!

Offering and encouraging chess? Absolutely!

We’ve found that when chess is offered to a class, 1/4-1/2 of the class consistently participate. The kids enjoy it because it suits their interests and personalities and because it’s something they’ve chosen.

Compulsion often breeds distaste and I believe giving a choice is always the best option.
